NEW CONSTRUCTION CRUMBLING DRIVEWAY –

Grande Vista Bay

This newly constructed home had a two year-old driveway that was crumbling and cracking away due to poor compaction of the base. The steep slope on the side of the driveway offered no room for expanding the driveway without retention – great opportunities for boulders to retain the slope in the backyard.

We suggested adding boulders with lots of planting pockets on the hillside to hold things in place. We also added natural stone step to give access to and from the upper driveway to the lower part of the yard and new hillside garden. Next, we had to add in a drainage system to take the water away from the steep hillside and send the water to the lower part of the property. We brought in 50 tons of boulders and 5 tons of natural stone steps.

The new 3500 square foot driveway was designed so that the homeowner could easily back a boat into the lower garage and turn around in the large circle. This area is held up by a Belgard Castle Manor retaining wall. The columns of the wall were topped with tan Crab Orchard stone caps with lamps for night driving. To break up the mass of Belgard Cambridge pavers, we added a 12-foot diameter circle pattern with a beige border to match the border around the edge of the driveway. It was a fun project with lots of challenges that ended with great results.
